Coiled clay vessel with cracked glaze surfaceMy work is based very firmly in ceramics as clay gives me a totally flexible material to work with. The direct involvement with the material, without the use of many tools or equipment in the making process, provides me with a very personal interaction with the clay. This interaction enables me to develop my ideas through the skills I have acquired and am continually acquiring.
My work is usually hand built and I experiment with surface texture, developing unusual surfaces which disrupt the concept of traditional ceramics. I work with large forms, both traditional and non-traditional, and installations, to express personal concerns and political concepts. I aim to break away from the preconceived traditions of decorative and functional ceramics and allow unconscious and spontaneous actions to develop forms through the building process. I am fully committed to the idea that clay can be used within a fine art context and actively promote the work of others as well as my own. I recently organised and curated a number of art exhibitions within businesses in Cambridge.
